JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Social Services and Justice Studies, the successful candidate will be required to teach theoretical and practical legal applications in the Paralegal program. The successful candidate will provide a meaningful and inclusive learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds and ages, and maintain the designated standards of the business profession.

The incumbent, as a licensed paralegal or lawyer in good standing, is accountable to teach any accredited course to Law Society of Ontario (LSO) professional standards, and to meet the competency requirements and responsibilities of the LSO in the accredited college Paralegal program. This program employs advanced paralegal specific software and specialized labs the incumbent will utilize for integrated teaching and learning. Courses to be taught include, but not limited to, Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Paralegal Computer Applications, Small Claims Court, Administrative Law, Employment Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Legal Writing Skills for Paralegals.

The successful candidate will liaise with full-time and part-time faculty and program technologist(s) to develop experiential learning goals to assist learners to meet course learning outcomes and to demonstrate knowledge and skill development to LSO specific competencies. ​Successful candidate will provide student support to prepare graduates to successfully pass LSO external accredited exams.


​RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Associate Dean, professors in the Social Services and Justice Studies provide academic leadership and develop effective and inclusive learning environments. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, the following:

​Delivering theory and practical-based courses
Creating a positive and innovative student-centred virtual/remote and/or in-person learning environment
Using a variety of teaching strategies most appropriate for the curriculum
Using a variety of techniques to evaluate achievement of learning outcomes
Managing the educational environment to facilitate an optimal learning experience and student success
Enhancing educational delivery and experiences through the use of technology
Applying college values and philosophy in work activities and interaction with others
Developing, evaluating, revising and delivering academic curriculum collaboratively with other professors in accordance with LSO competencies and l updates
Using Mohawk’s learning platform Canvas to deliver course content, communicate with students, and provide assignment feedback to promote student success


In addition, the incumbent will be expected to perform the following:

​Demonstrate the ability to teach relevant legislation, regulations, policy and procedures with the ability to research, prepare, and present to specific paralegal related issues
Provide leadership and an ethical, professional focus to a paralegal career, within the paralegal scope of practice, and administer in-program meaningful assignments and evaluations
Provide an engaging, effective, and inclusive remote/in-person learning environment for a variety of learning styles and learning methodologies to prepare graduates for careers in paralegal
Liaise with others to maintain and control specialized lab facilities & equipment
Undertake special projects, assignments, or tasks as deemed appropriate at the request of the program Associate Dean to promote student and program goals and related initiatives within the Mohawk College community


QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful applicant will have/be:

​Licensed paralegal or lawyer with LSO, in good standing (include license number in application)
Paralegal program graduate, at minimum, degree preferred or equivalent
Minimum 5-years recent, related experience working as a paralegal/lawyer in Small Claims Court, and board and tribunal matters
Experience preparing for, and appearing in, court, boards and tribunals
Professional Certifications such as Alternative Dispute Resolution
Teaching and/or service training experience preferred
Experience with agencies and legal firms, paralegal services, court and tribunal work for professional and community networking and mandated placement work is essential
​Related paralegal software competency and professional software experience required
​Exemplary communication, leadership, and interpersonal team building skills


This position is governed by the applicable legislation of the Province of Ontario. The successful candidate must have an ability to relate theoretical knowledge and practical applications through innovative delivery methods to provide a meaningful learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds and ages. The ability to work as a part of a team and demonstration of excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

Faculty members hired at Mohawk College must be prepared to teach with a learner-centered approach and to assist in the development and application of alternate delivery methods. He/she may be assigned to teach classes at any Mohawk campus.

Programs run on a year-round basis and teaching during the spring and summer months is required. Faculty may be scheduled to teach between the hours of 8:00am to 10:00pm.
