Professor, Exercise Science

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Human and Justice Studies in the School of Health, Human and Justice Studies, the incumbent facilitates the delivery of a range of courses in the School of Health, Human and Justice Studies. The incumbent will incorporate a variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies that are designed to meet the needs of learners. In addition, the Professor will have the opportunity to provide academic leadership in the coordination of courses and/or programs in accordance with the collective agreement and College procedures.

Professor Responsibilities:

• Implements a range of delivery strategies, which complements the varied learning styles represented in a current college classroom and encourages a cooperative learning climate, incorporating evidence- based practice and best practice guidelines to engage and support learners
• Develops and implements course learning outcomes and assessment strategies, ensuring that they reflect program goals
• Defines, evaluates and validates learning outcomes for courses and programs, ensuring that students are aware of relevant learning outcomes, strategies and assessment techniques
• Participates in the scholarship of teaching and learning and applied research
• Supports student progress in assigned courses through individual tutorial and academic counselling
• Engages in ongoing faculty development opportunities and effectively liaises with colleagues and other College and community partners to maintain a collaborative and relevant learning environment
• Contributes to program development by participating in the Provincial Program Review processes and maintenance of the program accountability portfolio
• Assists in program awareness and program recruitment activities
• Assists with the creation and supervision of student field placements as assigned
• Incorporates appropriate technological tools that support the learning environment
• Implements a range of delivery strategies to foster an inclusive learning environment


Qualifications:

• A relevant combination of education and experience, normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor of Science – Exercise Science or Kinesiology or degree in a related discipline and five (5) years of recent and relevant industry experience in a combination of exercise physiology, coaching, physical rehabilitation or personal training along with three (3) years of previous teaching experience, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
• Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree in a related field
• Current certification in one or more of the following: Canadian Society for Exercise Science - Clinical Exercise Physiologist; Certified Personal Trainer - High Performance Specialization; Certified Strength and Conditioning Professional; National Strength and Conditioning Association
• Experience with Bona Fide Occupational Requirements Candidate Preparation and Testing required
• Current First Aid/CPR certificate required
• Ability to demonstrate aspects of BFOR candidate testing in the following programs: Police Foundations, Customs and Border Services, Community and Justice Services, Protection, Security and Investigations, Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training, Paramedic
• A demonstrated understanding of the principles of adult learning along with experience developing curriculum is required
• Excellent grounding in best practice and emerging, knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field of exercise science
• A proven commitment to achieving and developing excellence in others
• The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of being open, adaptable, flexible and innovative in their work to support clients and teaching
• An ability to apply an understanding of diversity and inclusiveness to meet the needs of a diverse student population
• An ability to work within a collaborative team environment demonstrated through a strong network of contacts with other professionals, community agencies and employers
• A commitment to life-long learning in the field
• Exceptional communication and organizational skills
• Computer literacy and a demonstrated willingness to acquire and use learning tools (such as Loyalist’s “Canvas” System) commensurate with departmental requirements
