POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of English provides core writing and communications courses across multiple programs and credential levels. These courses focus on developing students’ abilities to read carefully, think critically, and communicate strategically—a skill set that is necessary to help students establish themselves as career-ready members of their communities. In addition, the department offers an Ontario Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing and Communications. The successful candidate will teach a range of writing and communications courses within the department and will contribute to the ongoing integration of universal design for learning, experiential learning, and multimodal communication into the department’s curricula.

The incumbent will teach, develop curriculum, design/revise specific courses, create an effective and innovative learning environment for our students, assess student progress and achievement; work collaboratively with colleagues, participate in committees and related associations. Teaching will be assigned at both the North and Lakeshore campuses and may include teaching at the International Graduate School (Toronto) and/or Orangeville campus.

The incumbent may also support student advising, student recruitment, graduate placement, assist with the promotion and marketing of programs and develop and maintain strong industry ties.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


The successful candidate will possess a graduate degree in a relevant field, such as Rhetoric and Composition, Professional Communication, Technical Communication, Applied Linguistics, Creative Writing, or English. In addition, the successful candidate will have at least three years of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary (preferably college) level with students of varied educational and cultural backgrounds.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate

• the ability to teach a number of different courses offered by the department;
• an awareness of current research in the teaching of writing and communication skills; and
• experience in at least one of the following three areas, specifically within the context of teaching writing and communication skills:
o universal design for learning (UDL)
o experiential learning
o multimodal communication

The following will be considered assets:

• Certification in second-language teaching (TESL Ontario or equivalent)
• Experience in the communications industry
• Demonstrated involvement in the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning or Applied Research


In addition, the successful candidate will have engaging and effective teaching skills, demonstrated ability to coach and support students, demonstrated experience managing classroom dynamics, strong knowledge and application of current pedagogical principles, a student focused approach and a demonstrated commitment to fostering innovation and positive change. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of principles of equity and inclusion, be a collaborative team player and be committed to a positive team culture. The successful candidate will possess well developed interpersonal communication and problem solving skills and have demonstrated ability to contribute positively to curriculum development and delivery.

All candidates must also submit a statement of no more than 500 words that articulates their position on the role of writing and communications courses within a polytechnic setting and how their approach to teaching aligns with this role.
