Salary Range: $67,893 to $117,697 per annum, established in terms of relevant educational qualifications and experience. The College also offers a complete range of fringe benefits.

Reporting to the Manager of the Mamidosewin Centre and functioning as part of the Mamidosewin Centre’s employee team, the incumbent provides counselling supports to students in a manner that is reflective of First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures and practices. This includes using Indigenous knowledge to perform ceremonies as appropriate. Indigenous knowledge is combined with empirically validated techniques and professional standards of the profession of counselling to inform the range of Indigenous counselling supports. As a Counsellor at Algonquin College, the incumbent assists students and potential students to function effectively as learners and as individuals by helping them understand, prevent or overcome personal, social or educational problems that may hinder learning or their ability to cope with everyday living. This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of presenting concerns including academic, career, personal and mental health challenges. Work may also include facilitating groups and/or providing workshops or presentations. The position requires the utilization of technology to manage an appointment schedule, electronic clinical record, and video or tele-counselling with technical support. Other related duties may also be assigned from time to time.

Required Qualifications:
Minimum of a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or culturally equivalent training;

Minimum of 1,600 hours of recent and relevant client contact experience (post-masters) in a setting serving First Nation, Inuit, and/or Metis peoples;

Eligible for registration with one of the colleges approved to regulate the provision of psychotherapy in Ontario (e.g., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario);

Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing counselling to Indigenous students and an understanding of the transitional challenges that they face, particularly the transition to post-secondary from rural and remote communities;

Demonstrated experience delivering workshops or presentations to groups of 25 to 100 people;

Advanced knowledge of Canada’s First Nation, Inuit, and/or Metis cultures, customs and heritages and demonstrated experience performing cultural ceremonies as appropriate;

Demonstrated training and experience conducting suicide risk assessment and mental health crisis intervention;

Demonstrated ability to function as a part of an interdisciplinary team;

Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to complete presentations;

Demonstrated computer skills; including the proficient use of an electronic client record system;

Experience liaising with organizations that refer and fund Aboriginal students to attend Ontario postsecondary institutions, including recruitment activities beneficial;

Training and experience in the administration of culturally informed career development counselling; including the selection and interpretation of current career assessment instruments beneficial;

Flexible work schedule; including the ability to occasionally travel to Algonquin Colleges campuses in Perth and Pembroke.
